Mountain Crest Express’ Athlete of the Week is Haylee Brown. She plays softball and basketball, and I had the opportunity to interview her.

How do you prepare for a game mentally and physically?

“I prepare mentally and physically for games in lots of ways. The night before I take a nice long bath to get all loose, then before the game I put on chap-stick, tape my ankle if it’s basketball season, roll out my hips, do stem in my shoulder if it’s softball season, and then get dressed. When I get dressed is when I take the time to mentally prepare myself. I like to listen to calming songs to help get my nerves down and then I put my hair in a low ponytail. Low ponytails are key! And if it’s a softball game, I add a bow and visor! I’m all about looks so if I look good, I’m gonna play good! Other things I do to prepare myself that helps my mental and physical abilities is practicing so I can be confident when it comes to games!”

What’s some good advice for other athletes?

“The best advice I can give to athletes is, believe in yourself! Confidence is key when you are an athlete! Also, play your hardest every second you get! You never know when it could all be over so give it your all!

What expectations do you set for yourself?

“I set high expectations while I am playing; I always am a perfectionist so I try to play up to my personal expectations. I sorta talk myself up by telling myself I can do hard things. If I’m playing as hard as I practice, I know I can perform my best each time I am on the court or field. Another thing I expect out of myself is improving! I am constantly trying to improve at every single thing imaginable! Even if it is a new cheer or a new dribble move! I especially am always trying to improve my pitches!”

How do you practice?

“I practice every chance I get! I have neighbors who have indoor basketball courts and they let me shoot around. We also own a shop where I pitch all winter long! My best practices involve LOUD music to pump me up and a goal in mind is to shoot 100 free throws, take 100 cuts off a tee or throw 50 strikes! I’m constantly setting goals for myself to beat and limits to push!”
