Over 100 years ago pumpkins were being made into jack-o-lanterns in Ireland. The name “pumpkin” comes from the Greek word pepon. Pumpkins are part of the Gourd family, which also includes cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew melons and zucchini. When pumpkins are cooked they are usually referred to as vegetables and also called fruit. They are also part of the Cucurbita family, or squash.

According to guinnessworldrecord.com, Mathias Willemijns grew the heaviest pumpkin on October 9th, 2016. His pumpkin weighed 1,190 kg (2,624.60 pounds) which is a pretty big pumpkin. “The tradition of carving faces into vegetables dates to the Celts. As part of their autumnal celebration, they wanted to light the way to their homes for the good spirits, so they carved faces into vegetables such as turnips and squash” (“Why Carved Pumpkins are a Symbol of Halloween”). I think that carving pumpkins is a very fun tradition. If pumpkins weren’t around during Halloween time, I personally don’t think it really would be Halloween.

Why we carve pumpkins is because in Ireland and Scotland they started to carve their own scary faces into potatoes or turnips and place them on the doorsteps or on windows to scare away “Stingy Jack” or other evil spirits. So if evil spirits wanted to come in, they couldn’t because they would be too scared and go away. So people wouldn’t be haunted by the evil spirits on Halloween or anytime before that. That is why we need to carve pumpkins. Sometimes Halloween can be bad a holiday because stupid adults thinks it’s funny to go out and scare little kids or take them away and hurt them, so we have to be careful what we do on Halloween night.

I think that Halloween can be a very fun holiday where little kids dress up like princesses or something scary looking. Halloween can lead to fun traditions and fun activities. Little kids enjoy trick-or-treating with family or friends. So this Halloween we should enjoy going out and having fun.
