The tide pod, known as the “forbidden fruit” due to its bright colors and alluring smell, is a toxic laundry detergent. It started with a Tumblr post a couple months ago, but has since spiraled into something a lot bigger. It became one of the leading Memes of January, showing how we can so readily joke about death and suicide. All over YouTube and other social networking platforms a challenge has surfaced; people are daring each other to actually consume the pods. What started out as a joke is now the reason why many have died or are in the hospital, as it can shut down vital organs in your body at a rapid pace.

It has forced poison control to post a warning to not eat the pods. Since the tide pod’s release, many people have consumed them, but none so drastic as this year. It has inspired many candies and drinks, in the hope that people will eat that instead of the toxic detergent. In response, some stores have begun locking up the tide pods in containers so that people under a certain age can’t purchase them. Law makers are trying to make a law regarding the color of the soap-filled capsules, demanding that they look less enticing. YouTube has been taking down as many of the challenge videos as possible in hopes of discouraging people. While it isn’t a big epidemic, it is still a problem that should be addressed as people have died due to this simple meme.

    2008: “Don’t Smoke Crack!”
    2018: “Don’t eat Tide Pods!”

Pretty sad that this was a problem. However, If you think about it, the media has blown this issue much more that it was when first starting out, causing more people to take the challenge than before it was blown up. Now THAT is the saddest part in all of this.
