Police Brutality is an ongoing issue that has been prevalent for a long time. We see protests of it today. Especially in football players taking a knee during the national anthem.

Why police act out in unnecessary violence could be from what they are being taught in police academy. A reporter by the name of Steve Featherstone went to a seminar that cops are paid to attend. The seminar is given by a man named Dave Grossman. Dave Grossman is a retired U.S. Army ranger. He is also the world’s sole authority on “killology.” Which is the examination of factors that both enable and restrain killing by soldiers and cops.

In his seminar he talked about how cops should attain a warrior like mindset. Cops should have this warrior mindset because this world is full of crime and the rates are only climbing. By gaining this warrior mindset, cops will be able to stop crime within seconds. They will be able to solve a problem instantly. Alike to soldiers. Soldiers are trained how to solve a situation within seconds. Which they need because if they let a few minutes go before solving a problem, they or someone else could end up dead. However, Featherstone stated, “The problem is, training police officers to think like warriors effectively alienates them from the communities they are sworn to protect. It can also lead them to perceive threats where none exist, escalating what should be minor conflicts into deadly force encounters.”

Cops and soldiers have different training. Soldiers are trained to kill. They solve problems by getting rid of the problem, which means killing a person. Cops, on the other hand, are trained to stop crime and from deaths from happening as much as possible. Recently on the news, we see that cops are solving their problems by killing. They are taking up the warrior mindset and starting to solve problems like a soldier would, not as a cop would. Cops are put in place to keep the peace, but they are not keeping peace; they are disturbing the peace. Like Featherstone said, they are disregarding the communities they come from, and viewing everyone and everything as a threat and a criminal, which has led to this unnecessary use of force and all the unnecessary shootings that we have been seeing on the news.
